24-year-old Oliver Nelson is truly taking the world by storm and is leading the current group of Nordic exports coming out of Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Originally growing up in Stockholm, Oliver’s first love of music came in the form of the drums and it wasn’t until 2007 that Oliver found electronic and fell in love. The very first life track was Justice and their single “D.A.N.C.E” which inspired Oliver to explore producing music on a more serious note.

Going to a specialist music school and playing the drums created influences that will stay with him forever. He fondly recalls his teacher telling him he would never make it in the music industry as he couldn’t read note-sheets and everything was learnt and output through pure listening

Inspiration came from a broad range and style of music and influences . Artists like Toto, Peter Gabriel and Jamiroquai all the way through to Ed Banger, Kavinsky, Goldroom and Ben Khan.

Using “Reason” and “Ableton” it was some 3 years before Oliver felt he had perfected his work enough to actually put it online and let others hear his music. From that point on, the rest is near history, going from unofficial remixes to being contracted for artists such as Blonde, Janet Jackson, Urban Cone, Bon Iver, Kim Cesarion, MNDR, Jutty Ranx, Keljet, Mikky Ekko, Ella Henderson, Route 94, Max Marshall, Ariana & The Rose, The Knocks, Lemaitre, Priory, Cazzette, Tove Lo, The Kooks and more.

Oliver regularly receives support from some of the web’s most influential blogs, websites and YouTube channels such as Suicide Sheep, Indie Shuffle, Dancing Astronaut, Earmilk, Kick Kick Snare, The Vibe Guide, Mr Revillz and many more. Oliver has also charted No. 1 on Hype Machine 6 times over with his top remixes reaching 5 million plus in streams across platforms such as Soundcloud, YouTube and Spotify.

“The support I receive from my fans and blogs is something that is very important to me, I find it extremely overwhelming but at the same time very blessed that so many people love the music I produce and can’t wait to see what the future holds” – Oliver Nelson

2014 saw another change in direction; Oliver wanted to showcase his talents to a live audience and has since become a regular DJ for French based label Kistuné, touring the world to locations such as Munich, Zurich, Denmark, Finland, Italy and London.

Early 2015 saw Oliver deliver his first debut original under his management companies’ label ‘Perfect Havoc’ ‘Found Your Love Feat. Heir’ (Skogsrå) exclusively premiered with Mr Suicide Sheep and mighty music blog Indie Shuffle! Found Your Love went straight to No. 1 on Hype Machine and currently holds at 800,000 plays on Soundcloud.

Found Your Love is set to release late September 2015, with Oliver supporting the record on his very first U.S. tour across LA, San Francisco, New Orleans & New York playing with artists such as Hayden James, Moon Boots, Autograh, Gigamesh and more.

The dance world way too often privileges the new, and not many dance artists write albums as good as In A Dream, the third full-length album by The Juan MacLean, this far into their career. The Juan MacLean have weathered electroclash, disco-punk, electro-disco, techno, house, deep house, and whatever we can call the sound of today. They never feel totally in step with the moment, but somehow always feel right and necessary. Put differently: there’s always something exciting to say about the music, regardless of the release date.

Let’s start with Nancy Whang. Nancy’s voice has always been a kind of secret weapon on The Juan MacLean records, but this album is her triumph. Just take a look above at the album art where she’s front and center. This is the Nancy Show – you get all sides of Nancy on this record, a wide range of expression. These are all love songs, but emotions run wild. And you can’t pull this off without Nancy – she’s not living in these songs, she’s leading them.

Like every Juan record, this one quotes freely from house and techno and disco. Dead drums and vintage synthesizers are abundant. This is a DFA record, after all. But early on in their career, The Juan MacLean stopped sounding like genres and just started sounding like The Juan MacLean. Part of that is lyrical—how the words interact with the melodies that carry them. The diction is always off in all the right ways. Another distinction is how much fun Juan and Nancy have with the arrangements of their songs. Different parts interact and play off one another in a way that’s remindful of the interplay on classic disco records.

The Juan MacLean always get away with EVERYTHING. For one, they always figure out a way to make the very old sound very new. For instance, the main groove on the album’s first track, “A Place Called Space,” is a combination of epic prog/rock, phased hi-hats, Moroder bass, vocals on delay, spacey lyrics. You’ve heard this before. But the surprise chorus halfway through is what makes it work: “It’s too late, don’t play your games here anymore,” Nancy sings. All that color and emotion . . . like she’s chastising the song itself. Secondly, they always GO THERE. The sounds you’re just not supposed to reach for, the Juan always reaches for.
